Indonesian Traditional Culture: Batik




Almost everyone knows about Batik, from the America to Asia.
Some of them do acknowledge that Batik is from Indonesia, even though the rest doesn’t.
The crazy thing is some country have claimed that Batik is their culture, but we don’t want to dig about that now.
Batik has a very variative pattern because almost every culture in Indonesia has their special pattern which they put in as the Batik.
There is a designer who use Batik for her fashion design which has been the most favorite fashion designer for almost all around the world.
She is Nicole Miller, who usually use the pattern of Mega Mendung for her Batik.
She said that Batik has become a lifestyle, not only in the form of traditional cloth, but also in any form in all areas of life.
Nowadays, a lot of designer has been adapt Batik to their fashion.
Actually, UNESCO has inaugurated Batik as a Humanitarian Heritage for Oral and not-a-thing culture from Indonesia since October 2, 2009.
Some of the designers or labels that use Batik are Dries Van Noten, Nicole Miller, Burberry Prorsum, and Diane von Furstenberg.
There are 3 common styles of Batik, such as Sekar Jagad, Sidomukti Magetan, Kraton, Jepara, and many more.
Batik Sekar Jagad comes from Java, more precisely Yogyakarta. Jogja Batik has a fresh meaning of the universe is the beauty or beauty that makes people who see it so fascinated.
Batik Sidomukti Magetan comes from the Magetan district, Batik has basic motifs of bamboo images and like other batik-batik, usually batik is used on formal occasions or ceremonies and meaningful hope to get the peace of mind.
In the beginning, Batik Keraton is so exclusive that ordinary people are not allowed to wear this motif and only wear the Sultan and his family.
But later, the regulation was revoked and the common people were allowed to wear this motif.
Among the causes of this exclusive motive is that the inventor of the motive was originally the daughters of the palace of Yogya itself which in fact is still a member of the Sultan's family. Actually, there are many models of Batik clothes owned by the Yogya Palace, but the ones in this picture are the most popular.
Batik Jepara can be divided into two types, namely the old motifs and new motifs.
Old Jepara Batik has a pattern with black lung color, brown elephant, flora and fauna leaves and green thread.
While the new Batik Jepara Batik is a lot of variations. Batik Jepara itself is also known as Batik kartini.

We can find various kinds of batik motifs in the city of Jepara.
